2018 Fall Book Group: We are excited to be reading together Who Do We Choose to Be? by Margaret Wheatley. Our first meeting is Thursday, October 18, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.

Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.

Theodore Roosevelt

Meg Wheatley uses several instructive quotes in the frontispiece of this book published last year, which takes a big picture look at the state of the world in which we live.  In each of the chapters in which she explores who we are, individually, collectively,  how we got here, and how we can choose to be together, she examines four salient aspects of our dilemma:

  1. What Science Teaches;
  2. Facing Reality by Looking at Particular Challenges Which Face Us;
  3. Claiming Leadership to Forge Paths of Inclusion and Away From Fear; and
  4. Restoring Sanity.

The format of the book lends itself to discussion by a group and we are certain to engage in lively banter on the topics in the chapters and in particular her final chapter, which explores the meaning of our “post truth” “reality”.  The last section of her book “Coda”  contains a beautiful quote by Thomas Merton:

Humans have a responsibility to find themselves where they are, in their own proper time and place, in the history to which they belong and to which they must inevitably contribute either their response or their evasions, either truth and act, or mere slogan and gesture.

At our September meeting of Exercises for the Soul (Monday, September 11, 2018), we will look at dates to begin our exploration of this book.  Newcomers to our book club are warmly welcomed.  Our meetings will take place at a member’s home in central Denver.  Email nancyarko@comcast.net for more information.
